Flower Size as an Honest Signal in Royal Irises (Iris Section Oncocyclus, Iridaceae)

چکیده
Flower traits, such as flower size or color changes, can act honest signals indicating greater rewards nectar; however, nothing is known about shelter-rewarding systems. Large flowers of Royal irises offer overnight shelter a reward to Eucera bees. A black patch might signal the entrance tunnel (shelter) and, together with size, these signals. We hypothesize that larger and patches indicate tunnels, tunnels will increase pollinator visits, enhancing plants’ reproductive success. measured seven species in controlled environment two from three natural populations varying size. Fruit seed sets were assessed populations. found positive correlation between flower, volume, suggesting signals, both under conditions wild. However, populations, this relationship its effect on fitness was population-specific. increased YER I. petrana, interactions flower/patch atropurpurea NET This suggests honesty positively selected study supports hypothesis pollinator-mediated selection leads signaling advertisement.

Pollination of Oncocyclus irises (Iris: Iridaceae) by night-sheltering male bees.
Irises in the section Oncocyclus (Siems.) Baker ( IRIS: Iridaceae) grow throughout the Middle East and have large and dark-coloured flowers but no nectar reward available to flower visitors. Consequently, no reward-collecting pollinators have been observed visiting the flowers during daytime. The only visitors are solitary male bees ( Eucera spp.: Apidae) that enter the flowers at dusk and stay...
متن کاملDecline of endemic Oncocyclus irises (Iridaceae) of Lebanon: survey and conservation needs
The endemic Oncocyclus irises of Lebanon are rare and threatened. Their historical locations (based on information from herbaria and the available literature) were compared to an update of their current distribution. Only 50% of the previously known populations were confirmed extant, indicating a considerable decline in the range of these taxa. The populations that were relocated were either sm...
متن کاملUnlocking the Karyological and Cytogenetic Diversity of Iris from Lebanon: Oncocyclus Section Shows a Distinctive Profile and Relative Stasis during Its Continental Radiation
Despite being an important target of conservation concern and horticultural interest, Lebanese irises yet have a confusing taxonomic history and species' delimitation is often considered problematic, more especially among royal irises (Iris section Oncocyclus). Indeed, these irises of exceptionally large and spectacular flowers have radiated across Caucasus and eastern Mediterranean giving rise...
متن کاملThe Complete Plastid Genome Sequence of Iris gatesii (Section Oncocyclus), a Bearded Species from Southeastern Turkey
Iris gatesii is a rare bearded species in subgenus Iris section Oncocyclus that occurs in steppe communities of southeastern Turkey. This species is not commonly cultivated, but related species in section Iris are economically important horticultural plants. The complete plastid genome is reported for I. gatesii based on data generated using the Illumina HiSeq platform and is compared to genome...
متن کاملAntler size provides an honest signal of male phenotypic quality in roe deer.
Identifying factors shaping secondary sexual traits is essential in understanding how their variation may influence male fitness. Little information is available on the allocation of resources to antler growth in territorial ungulates with low sexual size dimorphism. We investigated phenotypic and environmental factors affecting both absolute and relative antler size of male roe deer in three c...
